Tesla for Thee But Not For Me - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

In case you missed it and, if you are like me and rarely watch Bill O'Reilly, you probably did. I caught this while driving and couldn't wait to see the video.

Dennis Miller and Bill O'Reilly are discussing Tesla Motors with BOR arguing that government funding of the company is in reality a national security expense, Dennis is having none of it. Then, at around the 3:45 mark Miller sets him up so beautifully that I just roared with laughter.

The "No Spin Zone" my ass.

Skip to the 1:56 mark for the relevant discussion.

And, of course, open thread.

14 I'm a conservative oriented fellow. I'm somewhat amused by how much the liberal/progressive left hates O'Reilly--limb of Satan, Spawn of the Devil (if they believed in religion). But I find O'Reilly virtually unwatchable for another reason. He's a world class blowhard. He's like the "boys" who ran Mr. Eich out of Mozilla. You can have any opinion you like so long as you agree with him. Still compared to say Dan Rather, O'Reilly might be a viable alternative---if he just wasn't such a bloviating jerk!

I know people in the wind and solar industry, living here in hippie Austin, and even they laugh at it. I'm afraid to say what I think of BOR.  Suffice it to say he's as dumb as any media figure (now that is a damning standard), and his appeal is a complete mystery.

I assume the "national security" idiocy is the usual completely baseless "analysis" that is, unfortunately, very widespread (I've even heard otherwise intelligent GOP office-holders allude to it):  that reducing imported oil dependence will have any concrete effect on our foreign policy or national security.

Uh, no it won't.  Energy ABUNDANCE is the (obvious) desirable situation, which could be easily achieved (without any meaningful environmental cost) by simply letting markets and technology work their very unmagical magic.  But such a happy thing would have, probably, zero impact on our national security.

Unless you assume a radically different overall foreign policy, and a willingness to live with the risks and costs of a world pretty much free of US influence, then self-sufficiency in petroleum/energy (or more reasonably, North American self-sufficiency - Canada and Mexico) has no particular value beyond the implied economic (unrelated) one.  We gain from a global economy, and have an interest in secure sea lanes and world order that goes far beyond just oil (and always has).

We may be headed towards part of this picture in any case.  It's a fundamentally unserious country, on all important matters, including foreign policy, so we may end up rolling the dice and seeing how things work out.  But reducing oil imports, absent huge unrelated changes in our overall national security strategy and risk tolerance, would/will have no impact in of it itself.

And no, it's not smart to just go with the flow and bank the support for rational oil development/use that comes from this simplistic and incorrect idea of reduced imports = national security advantage.  What would be smart would be educating the public and changing the public framework to an economically literate one in which energy development is understood as a key element of a truly vibrant economy.  If we/someone cannot frame important issues in serious terms, but always rely on dumbed-down (or even incorrect, as in this case) slogans and mass misunderstandings, then any progress will be fitful and random.  We're in the various messes we're in primarily, specifically BECAUSE all public policy issues are discussed in ridiculously dumbed down or misleading terms.

I swear there isn't a one of them that can tell the difference between Cadmium and Cadbury's, or a Semi-Auto and a revolver. I used to listen to Dennis Miller in the AM online, but then they delayed it so I couldn't. Oh well. Pleasant enough guy but he can't seem to tell the difference between a distraint warrant and a gopher. I long for the day when someone on the air says, "I ain't got a clue. Can I look it up on Wiki?" 95 well we could drill more, add refineries, or we can use electricity that can also use gas or oil. and pluggin in a car in somehow more affrodable to the average guy? i can load my truck with fossil fuel and run it a hell of a lot cheaper than trying to run heat or air, with the exception of a couple of mths a year where i can survive high temps or low temps by wearing barely any clothing or dressing in robes and blankets before i bite the bullet.

96 I remember reading in Fortune magazine about 35-40 years ago that the answer was nuclear f**** fusion. Fortune glowingly opined that this was the answer and was going to be reality in about 2014 or so. Well so far I don't know of any working fusion plants producing electricity in my neighborhood. As a previous poster said: it'll take 2 nuclear power plants in every State to produce enough electricity to feed this greenie wet dream.

137 About a dozen years or so ago when the then bleeding heart liberal compassionate conservative president proposed building 'democracy' in the ME my answer was to spend the money on, oh, a hundred nuke plants at home and put the goat lovers behind an iron curtain they so much earned.

When searching for a new car, conserving energy is patriotic, so I hear, so I could go with a Cobalt with the deadly ignition switch for $12k, or a $100k Tesla... with gas a $4/gallon I could burn ($100k - $12k = $88k, $4/gal) 22,000 gallons of gas RIGHT NOW - 'MERICA!

Knowing I will break even, maybe, when the Tesla gets, oh, 660,000 miles on it (assuming 30 mpg on the Cobalt and free juice on the Tesla) - clearly the smart thing to do.

The problem with most, if not all, libs/greens like O'Reilly is that that actually are fucking stupid, or simply evil.

p.s. - all calcs rough PV - it is simple and you don't have to justify assumptions.
